Lovely to read about Trevor Hockey.....thank you for the memories. I watched him play alongside Tony Currie, Len Badger etc etc....the dream team. He was flamboyant and great to watch and my friends and I all loved him👍 so sad he died so young but a Yorkshireman playing for my country, Wales doesn't get much better than that!
That’s a great piece Ian, Trevor Hockey is one of my all time favourites, absolutely ran his socks off, he would tackle anybody, Jack Charlton and you mentioned Mike Doyle, proper hard players. He just relished the challenge Hockey really did the donkey work and he had skill. A legend in my eyes. I once saw his Vitesse parked on Leopold Street in Sheffield, Near the Buccaneer club. The car was worse for wear .
That 71 side really could destroy anyone on their day. Thanks for some great memories 👍🏻⚔️
This era was, unfortunately, “before my time” in supporting The Blades, but as you say, everyone can recognise Trevor Hockey even if they never saw him play!
I especially liked “…leaving stylish memories with all the fans he played for”; “…a player who would never shirk a challenge”; and best of all (!) “…and tackle anything that moved” which made me laugh out loud.
It’s great that he had some time with Sheffield United and is remembered so fondly; thanks for the memories.
Thank you Ian for this great reminder of one of my favourite players.
My fondest memories of Trevor Hockey are of his exploits in the mud.
In those days, much of the pitch was grass free. With heavy rain it became a morass of mud.
Hockey thrived in such conditions. Whilst other players slipped and fell, Hockey would glide over the mud. He would slide in to crunching tackles and, in a flurry of mud, cruise away with the ball.
He was a great ball winner, just what that team of talents needed.
But above all, as your article so vividly recalls, he was a great character loved by all we fans.
