Sheffield United v WBA (2-2) and Millwall (0-1)
A double header of ratings after Blades secure four important points on the road.
These ratings will follow after every game of the Championship season, and they will — depending on your outlook — be harsh or too kind. Any 1-10 rating should make use of every number, and as Riley explains below, the ratings system starts at a 5 (when a player enters the field) and goes up or down depending on their contribution.

Player Ratings v West Brom
Michael Cooper – 4
Unfortunate with the deflection, but you can’t be giving your ‘keeper glowing scores after conceding two goals.
Femi Seriki – 4
Caught out of position a couple of times. Generally struggled.
Alfie Gilchrist – 5
Made some crucial clearances with his head, little else of note.
Jack Robinson – 4
He was bullied a bit by WBA, who kept forcing possession onto his side as he kept aimlessly booting it long.
Harrison Burrows – 7
Hard to place between a 7 and an 8 in my rating system. Two bits of technical brilliance from him likely the difference between a loss and a draw, but was beaten a few times at the other end.
Vinicius Souza – 5
Had one real sloppy moment where he conceded possession in our own half but was fine aside from that.
Sydie Peck – 6
Thought he was decent, played a lovely pass in the build-up to the first goal.
Jesurun Rak Sakyi – 4
Failed to have much of a meaningful impact on the game.
Callum O’Hare – 6
Scored and ran himself into the ground. Decent.
Gustavo Hamer – 5
Had some real moments of quality with the ball but was far too temperamental on the whole — so many silly fouls.
Tyrese Campbell – 6
Didn’t do loads but was in the right place at the right time to get the goal, as usual.
Average rating – 5.09
Player Ratings v Millwall
Michael Cooper – 6
Back to clean sheet ways. Didn’t really have to do much but stopped what he did face with ease
Alfie Gilchrist – 6
Saw some people criticising him but not really too sure why? Gave the ball away in our half once which was poor but made quite a few important tackles and blocks. Don’t see anything wrong with that level of performance myself.
Harry Souttar – 7
Don’t think their centre forward won a header all night. Good job.
Jack Robinson – 7
I slated him for “aimlessly booting it long” against West Brom and he goes and pulls out that pass just a couple of days later, fair enough mate.
Harrison Burrows – 6
Looked a threat on the left and did fairly well when needed defensively.
Vinicius Souza – 5
Wasn’t really having a great time before he came off injured, hope he’s alright
Sydie Peck – 6
Some bright moments where he displayed excellent footwork and was relatively solid overall.
Jesurun Rak Sakyi – 4
Don’t think he beat his man once, needs to re-find his form a little.
Callum O’Hare – 5
Conceded possession in dangerous areas more than a couple of times in the first half, and improved in the second.
Gustavo Hamer – 7
Lovely touch for the goal and set up pretty much all of our chances. Quality shone through.
Rhian Brewster – 5
Got the goal which I, and surely everybody else, am delighted by but he had a tough time both before and after the goal and struggled to hold it up.
Subs:
Tom Davies – 6
Looked very lively, nipping into tight spaces to nick the ball away, great energy which helped push us over the line.
Sam McCallum – 6
What a huge player to bring on when you’re winning. The bloke’s leap is absolutely ridiculous, genuinely never seen anything like it.
Average rating – 5.85
Ratings system:
0 – Reserved for anyone who has a wayward effort at goal smash me in the face, unlikely to ever happen.
1 – Worst of the worst. Saved for disastrous performances, with result-altering mistakes.
2 – A terrible performance. Performances where a player offers very little and has many unsuccessful actions, ultimately proving to be a major detriment to the team’s overall performance.
3 – A bad performance. Negative contribution. Like a 2, just a bit less rubbish.
4 – A below-average performance. Not necessarily having a negative impact on the game; it could just be a player who struggled to impact the game at all.
5 – The baseline rating. All players go into a game starting on a 5 — it’s bang average, given out for an unremarkable yet solid performance, for a postman delivering the post.
6 – A decent performance. A player who gets a 6 has positively contributed to the game, and at the very least has had some impressive moments while being generally solid outside of them.
7 – A good performance. Awarded for players who had a noticeable positive impact on the game.
8 – A very good performance. A player who made significant contributions to the outcome of the game with their performance and consistently displayed a high level throughout.
9 – An outstanding performance. To score as high as a 9, a player needs to be dominant throughout the match, performing at a level well above the standard and/or making multiple game-changing contributions.
10 – A perfect 10, unlikely to ever see the light of day as nobody has a flawless game. For me to even think about giving out a 10 it would probably have to be a player doing something historic or unheard of.
Ridiculously harsh ratings. They’re top of the league. Give em a break…
