Sheffield United v Burnley (0-2) & WBA (1-1)
The first home loss, and suddenly Michael Cooper has conceded three goals at Bramall Lane. We conceded more in some halves last season; here's Riley's view.
These ratings will follow after every game of the Championship season, and they will — depending on your outlook — be harsh or too kind. Any 1-10 rating should make use of every number, and as Riley explains below, the ratings system starts at a 5 (when a player enters the field) and goes up or down depending on their contribution.
Riley Roberts
Burnley (0-2)
Michael Cooper – 4
Could’ve probably done better for the first.
Alfie Gilchrist – 4
Didn’t impress at either end of the pitch.
Harry Souttar – 4
He got spun two or three times, but honestly, that's not the most important part about him in this game. Awful injury. I'm gutted.
Jack Robinson – 6
Played some alright passes. Better of the 2 CBs on the day.
Harrison Burrows – 5
Nothing spectacular at either end to note.
Vinicius Souza – 5
Hope he’s alright but the injury doesn’t seem good. Was fine
Sydie Peck – 5
Got caught out a few times but not disastrous.
Callum O’Hare – 5
Did what he could with little involvement. Okay performance
Rhian Brewster – 3
The two times we actually looked like doing any damage to them he killed it with some poor passes.
Gustavo Hamer – 5
Tried to create but wasn’t really successful, counts for something, I guess.
Kieffer Moore – 4
Thought he looked decent early on but overall struggled to link the play and never looked like threatening Burnley’s goal.
Subs:
Tom Davies – 6
Bright spark when he came on. Probably should’ve scored with the chance he had but he displayed some neat footwork in the middle of the park.
Average rating – 4.67
West Brom 1-1
Michael Cooper – 6
Couldn’t have done much about the goal which I thought was an excellent finish but made 1 or 2 good saves.
Alfie Gilchrist – 6
Solid. Had one of his better games going forwards too.
Anel Ahmedhodzic – 8
Excellent performance. Defensively sound and looked about our only threat when it came to breaking WBA down in settled play.
Jack Robinson – 6
Decent. Remember him making one good tackle to prevent a counter, played some neat long passes.
Harrison Burrows – 7
First half he was immense, didn’t get beaten once and was all-round excellent. Let Fellows get the better of him once or twice in the second but still managed to work room for some good deliveries. Good performance on the whole.
Tom Davies – 4
Lost track of how many times he gave away the ball in dangerous areas. Might be generous giving him a 4.
Sydie Peck – 6
Thought he kept it ticking well dropping deep to pick up the ball, surprised to see him getting some stick on Twitter.
Andre Brooks – 8
Never thought I’d see Ande Brooks score a goal this season. Delighted for him. Massive threat all game even at the end when his body had nothing left.
Callum O’Hare – 6
Decent. Wouldn’t go further. Assist was excellent but he did his usual act of running into players and losing it too easily either side of that moment.
Gustavo Hamer – 4
Less impactful than usual in possession and probably fortunate not to have been sent off. Unimpressive.
Kieffer Moore – 3
A mess. Couldn’t hold it up, retain possession or do anything a CF should do really.
Average rating – 5.82
Ratings system:
0 – Reserved for anyone who has a wayward effort at goal smash me in the face, unlikely to ever happen.
1 – Worst of the worst. Saved for disastrous performances, with result-altering mistakes.
2 – A terrible performance. Performances where a player offers very little and has many unsuccessful actions, ultimately proving to be a major detriment to the team’s overall performance.
3 – A bad performance. Negative contribution. Like a 2, just a bit less rubbish.
4 – A below-average performance. Not necessarily having a negative impact on the game; it could just be a player who struggled to impact the game at all.
5 – The baseline rating. All players go into a game starting on a 5 — it’s bang average, given out for an unremarkable yet solid performance, for a postman delivering the post.
6 – A decent performance. A player who gets a 6 has positively contributed to the game, and at the very least has had some impressive moments while being generally solid outside of them.
7 – A good performance. Awarded for players who had a noticeable positive impact on the game.
8 – A very good performance. A player who made significant contributions to the outcome of the game with their performance and consistently displayed a high level throughout.
9 – An outstanding performance. To score as high as a 9, a player needs to be dominant throughout the match, performing at a level well above the standard and/or making multiple game-changing contributions.
10 – A perfect 10, unlikely to ever see the light of day as nobody has a flawless game. For me to even think about giving out a 10 it would probably have to be a player doing something historic or unheard of.
Spot on about Burnley's first. He should have saved it. Superb keeper, mind, which is probably why we're judging him harshly
