Roy looks back on a month where the goals flowed (mainly against) and the corrupt Premier League were found to be in the pocket of Sheffield United.
Following the 4-0 FA Cup victory at Gillingham, the Blades had a fortnight off thanks to the Premier League’s mini winter break. Whereas other clubs sent their players abroad to get some rest ahead of the the final 18 games of the season, Chris Wilder kept his players in England and on the training ground:
United eventually returned to league action against West Ham, in only the third game the Blades had played at Bramall Lane in the last 43 days, and the fans certainly got their money’s worth. An exciting, if scrappy, game burst into life after 28 minutes when the Hammers opened the scoring though Maxwell Cornet. The Blades hit back soon after with Ben Brereton Díaz getting his first goal in United colours to send the teams in level at the break.
Despite United being on top for most of the second half, it was West Ham who took the lead with 15 minutes to go. Gustavo Hamer brought down Danny Ings in the area and James Ward-Prowse converted the spot kick to put the Londoners on course for three underserved points. As the game went into injury time, Blades substitute Rhian Brewster was given a straight red for a late challenge on Emerson before moments later, West Ham’s Vladimír Coufal received his second yellow card in five minutes meaning the game ended ten-a-side.
