Player Ratings: Sheffield United 1-2 Southampton
The ratings from Riley as the Blades lose another home game, but it's a good job there are no marks for the referee.
Riley Roberts
Michael Cooper - 3
Had some really panicky moments on the ball. Pretty much invited pressure every time he had it.
Japhet Tanganga - 6
Got forward a fair bit in his hybrid RCB/RB role. Solid both in and out of possession.
Mark McGuinness - 4
Turned for the 2nd goal, didn’t deal with the long ball forward for the penalty. Thought Stewart got the better of him a bit too often.
Ben Mee - 5
Unfairly penalised for an excellent challenge, He had a fairly solid game, without being spectacular.
Chiedozie Ogbene - 6
Covered some ground up and down the right hand side and picked up some nice pre-positions, though did have a moment where he was too nice, and let O’Hare take a ball off him in the box when Ogbene could’ve pulled the trigger.
Harrison Burrows - 4
A bit loose on the ball and unable to provide much of a threat in the final third.
Tom Davies - 4
Potential to be my most contentious rating of the season, but I’ll defend it by saying I’m purely looking through the lens of his performance tonight, and not the potential impact he could have on the team. Davies did try to progress us at times, but was also caught in some of the scrappiness, and then you see the 1st goal. He’s marking Stewart, still marking him, he’s no longer following Stewart, Stewart scores. Professional footballers not losing their man is a basic requirement.
Sydie Peck - 4
Tried to get on the ball, but he was frustrating when he received with space behind him and didn’t turn into it. Didn’t offer loads, but can feel very hard done but to have his moment ripped away from him like that.
Callum O’Hare - 6
Got around a lot as ever and was involved in a lot of our best play. He should’ve done better with the chance after Hamer’s free kick, mind you.
Gustavo Hamer - 5
Don’t think he was impressive on the whole, as he seemed to give it away cheaply at times, but he did create 2 out of our 3 best chances, and that includes finding Campbell for the goal.
Tyrese Campbell - 7
His best performance of the season. Looked more like the threat from last season, getting on the end of attacks and stretching the defence. Lovely finish for the goal.
Average rating - 4.91
Ratings system:
0 – Reserved for anyone who has a wayward effort at goal smash me in the face, unlikely to ever happen.
1 – Worst of the worst. Saved for disastrous performances, with result-altering mistakes.
2 – A terrible performance. Performances where a player offers very little and has many unsuccessful actions, ultimately proving to be a major detriment to the team’s overall performance.
3 – A bad performance. Negative contribution. Like a 2, just a bit less rubbish.
4 – A below-average performance. Not necessarily having a negative impact on the game; it could just be a player who struggled to impact the game at all.
5 – The baseline rating. All players go into a game starting on a 5 — it’s bang average, given out for an unremarkable yet solid performance, for a postman delivering the post.
6 – A decent performance. A player who gets a 6 has positively contributed to the game, and at the very least has had some impressive moments while being generally solid outside of them.
7 – A good performance. Awarded for players who had a noticeable positive impact on the game.
8 – A very good performance. A player who made significant contributions to the outcome of the game with their performance and consistently displayed a high level throughout.
9 – An outstanding performance. To score as high as a 9, a player needs to be dominant throughout the match, performing at a level well above the standard and/or making multiple game-changing contributions.
10 – A perfect 10, unlikely to ever see the light of day as nobody has a flawless game. For me to even think about giving out a 10 it would probably have to be a player doing something historic or unheard of.
