Part two of our Dave Bassett special: survival against the odds, two unforgettable derby wins, United at their top-flight peak and a first trip to Wembley since 1936.
Really enjoying this series. I first went to a United game March 1991, so Bassett a big part of my intro to the club. I sadly missed Bassett’s promotion years – and hadn’t appreciated the extent of the 90/91 recovery till watching the season review in years that followed.
The 93 cup run nearly ended at the first hurdle in the only game I got to other than the semi-final – we had a bit of a shocker in a freezing home game vs Burnley, with Deane I think not fully fit, Beesley contributing to putting us 2-0 down before eventually getting the equaliser in injury time. Quite the eventful one for Adrian Heath too.
Like Richard, I remember Franz Carr fondly – the type of confidence to try to jink past the defender that I felt we didn’t have at the time, and didn’t see again till Borbokis arrived. Pretty sure Carr was a loan we made permanent, and not sure what happened to him the following season as I can’t picture him featuring.
Brilliant these Bassett pods, cheers lads.
Best manager I’ve known for us
