Great stuff as usual Panchero, don’t ever stop contributing to our Blades community. Much love and respect for everything you do ✊🏼🔐⚔️❤️
As regards John Gannon, I use to stand on the Kop and there was always someone shouting abuse at him before a ball was kicked, after a ball was kicked, not always by him, and throughout a match regardless of how he played and how ever the team faired. He admittedly had a perm but he was highly underrated and I was always gobsmacked as a youngster at how he received such an abuse from at least one of our fanbase. Defo happened, and hopefully it was just one guy that was stood near me behind the goal on the old Kop but sadly there was a few I think, that only shut up when Deano & or Agana raised the roof ⚔️❤️
Regarding John Gannon there was a sizeable minority who thought he was bad and I think quite possibly people shouted at him as you say. Personally I thought he was pretty good at a time when a lot of our midfielders were "combative" ie put themselves around a bit, but couldn't pass more than 5 yards.
On Gannon, although he was the scapegoat (Unitedites always seems to need one), if you listen to those who played with him, they speak very highly of his abilities. Looking back at the videos, a lot of goals come from him. I never liked the hate he got.
A random thing I remember was part of the kop randomly singing the A-Team theme part way through a (dull) game. Can’t remember when it was - possibly early 2000s. I am certain it happened!
Thanks, Roy – very entertaining although my answer to all your questions is “I have no idea!”
I was rather touched by this: “He has since said he wanted to me to “catch the bug” but I’m not sure taking a six-year-old to watch third-tier football was the best way to achieve this. That said, here I am writing about United-related things that I’m not sure even happened.”
It seems your Dad was on to something – there’s more than one way to skin a cat.
Connor Sammon miss of the season . . . I’d quite (understandably!) forgotten that one. Football’s a funny old game.
Enjoyed this. On the Arsenal one, I was fairly close to the front with my uncle and my recollection (may also be wrong) was:
- we did sing “Seaman, where’s your kids?”, but rather than it being a reaction to the Overmars goal it was done it a light-hearted way when he was getting ready for the 2nd half, and he gave a smile to the away end.
- this might have been repeated (less light-heartedly) after the 2nd goal but I’ve no memory of that – it felt like we just sang “Brucie, take em off” for about half an hour.
- I do remember him chatting to fans in breaks of play about what happened. I don’t remember him having a crisis of conscience towards the end where he considered levelling the score!
Regarding Goal Music, am I the only one who recognised the Kings of the Wild Frontier Burundi drums sampled in the version of Tom Hark that they used to play?
I am the only one, you say? Not enough Adam and the Ants aficionados at the Lane. Sort it out, COH!

Sue.
Definitely remember the Professionals being played too, after a goal.
